This evening will take place less than a week from polling day, in what is one of the biggest elections in our lifetime  Pleased to announce also that we will have an American student journalist joining us for the evening!  There will be a group discussion for roughly an hour, followed by a Mace debates session. This involves teams being formed and a motion being given, followed by a period of prep and writing points for a speech, then returning to debate. It is a fun and impromptu method of learning and bettering one’s speaking! We’d love to see you all there!

The debate will cover a wide range of topics, some serious and some less serious, allowing people to debate on however many topics they would like.

We are very excited to announce our first external speaker debate on Thursday September the 19th at 7PM in C.G86! (Veronica Guerin Theatre)

A well-known topic for many students, cannabis legalisation is on the rise in many western countries and American states.
A tug of war ensues between those who believe in the benefits of legalisation (potential tax revenue, medical uses etc) and those who have concerns about public health, addiction, and societal impacts.

It’s a hot topic, with opinions sure to go up in smoke!

We invite any members who wish to speak at this debate to DM us and we’ll add you to the ticket, there will be 2 student speakers each side.

There will also be a QnA afterwards which will take more of a discussion format.

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Walking Debate + Introduction

Starts Tue 10th Sep 2024 at 18:00
Ends at 19:20
Cost FREE
Max 60 attendees
Type IN-PERSON Event

Location: DCU Glasnevin Campus

Welcome back all and welcome to our first event of the semester!

This will be a simple walking debate, quite informal. The idea is that a moderator will read out a motion (on any range of topics), those who agree will walk to one side of the room, those who disagree to the other. The floor will then be opened to discuss opinions, ask questions and respectfully argue.

Regardless of how long certain motions are discussed, the event should run for approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes, after which we would encourage all attendees to come to the Slipper afterwards for some refreshments!

Since this is our first event back we really would love to see a strong attendance, and would encourage all attendees, from any background of public speaking to come along and get stuck in! This will also be a great opportunity for previous members to be reacquainted and new members to meet new people!
