Sub Aqua Club FAQs
Can I dive abroad with this certificate?
Yes! The qualifications you gain with us are internationally recognised
Can I join in Semester 2?
*Please note new sign ups in semester 2 may not be able to participate in scuba diving activities. This is due to the requirement to attend and complete snorkel training during semester 1 before progressing to scuba. Please enquire for more information* We do have the option to join in semester 2 and play underwater hockey, or be involved in our social events.
How do I get in touch?
The best ways to find out more about Sub-Aqua is to either sign up on the mailing list or just simply reach out us! You can find us on Instagram too!
I have dived before with PADI or equivalent, do I need to train?
In order to dive with our club we need to know what level you are at. So if you already have another diving grade with another organization, all we ask is you do an equivalency test.
Do I need to have dived before?
Absolutely not! All we ask our trainees is to have a basic ability to swim and to express an interest to learn these new skills.
When do we train for scuba and snorkeling and Underwater Hockey?
We train every Thursday evening at 9pm. We meet up at the container at 7pm and then head over to National Aquatic Centre to learn essential dive skills. We also have fitness training every Thursday at 6pm in the DCU pool or Underwater Hockey at 9pm in the National Aquatic Centre
Caving Club FAQs
How many trips do you host each year?
We aim to host 2-3 trips a semester!
How do I find the training wall?
Training takes places Wednesday 5-7pm and Friday 5-8pm in the Minor Hall gym. To get here, go to the sports centre. At the reception desk, ask to be let into caving training. They will open the gate for you. Follow this corridor all the way to the end and we are the last door on the right.
Can I join mid year?
Yes! We offer beginner training year round. Just register as a member and show up to a training session.
Do I need any experience?
No experience is required. We welcome beginners as well as seasoned cavers. Training and equipment is provided for safety and skill development.
Where do the trips take place?
The main trip areas are Clare, Fermanagh, Cork, Leitrim and expeditions abroad! These are areas that you wouldn't typically visit so you get to see parts of Ireland you otherwise might not visit!
Fencing Club FAQs
Does the club only fence epee?
No. While we mostly fence epee, we are expanding into foil a the moment and you can always find someone willing to try their hand in sabre
What should i bring with me?
We would recommend a to bring comfortable sports clothes, runners a bottle of water, and even a friend
Is equipment provided?
Our club has all the equipment you need to get started until you feel ready to get your own gear.
Do I need any experience?
No, not at all. almost all of our members and many of the top fencers in the country started in college.
Archery Club FAQs
Will I need my own equipment?
DCU Archery provide all necessary equipment you will need for training and competitions
Do you need to have experience to join?
Not at all, we provide excellent beginner courses with our coaches to get you started. Our training caters to all levels
Table Tennis Club FAQs
Do you offer any competitions for more advanced players?
Yes! We enter the College Leagues and All Ireland Intervarsities every year! We often enter multiple teams so don't be afraid to try out some competitive table tennis!
Do we need to bring anything with us to the sessions?
We provide the bats, balls and, of course, the tables! All we recommend is that you wear appropriate clothing so that you can play table tennis comfortably!
Do you host coaching sessions?
We will be hosting coaching sessions on Mondays during the first hour of the 5-7pm session! No additional fees required!
Are you beginner-friendly?
Yes! A large amount of our members every year are beginners or intermediates and we try our best to cater to everyone no matter their skill level!
Where do your training sessions take place?
We train in the Main Hall of the DCU Sports Complex on the Glasnevin Campus!
When are your training sessions?
Every Monday 5-7pm and Wednesday 4-6pm!
Japanese Society FAQs
I don't have a DCU account, but I want to join!
It's OK not to have a DCU account; as many of our members come from the language school. You should be able to register an account using your own email if you first click Log In / Register then click the ""external login" button. From there you can select "other student" or "external", create an account and confirm your registration. Then you should be able to request (and pay for) membership in the society here. Accounting & Finance Society FAQs
How do I get involved?
At the start of Semester 1, we hold an EGM to elect two First Year Reps. Then at our AGM at the end of Semester 2, you’ll have the chance to run for one of our 10 committee positions or join our subcommittee. Throughout the year, we also host a variety of events and are always looking for students to get involved!
What is the best way to stay up to date with upcoming events?
We share all our updates on Instagram — @afdcu. You’ll find everything you need to know there! If you have any questions, feel free to send us a DM and our committee will get back to you.
Do I have to be in the Accounting & Finance course to join?
Not at all! We welcome students from all courses. Our events are diverse and designed to suit any student, no matter their background.
Chess & Checkers Society FAQs
I'm a total beginner/not a strong player, can I join?
Of course!!! Most of our members would label themselves as casual, and we had regular participation from players from 400-2000 rating last year.
When and where do you meet for club nights?
It changes every semester, the best way to know is to join our WhatsApp group (email us to be added, it's also available through our chess.com club!) or check our stories on Instagram! @dcu_chess.
Rowing Club FAQs
Where is training?
Neptune Rowing Club in Islandbridge, for water sessions, weights, and ergos in the evenings. We also have designated rowing access times at the DCU Glasnevin campus gym.
How often is training?
Novices: 4 times a week Experienced rowers: 7/8 times a week
Do you compete in competitions?
We regularly host friendly races with other unis for novices throughout the year, allowing them to build confidence and gain experience. Our main DCU competition is the annual University Championships where colleges from all over Ireland come to compete for a weekend in April. Additionally, our members, through DCU's membership with Neptune Rowing Club can represent the club at regattas.
Do I have to row to join?
Absolutely not! You can also get involved as a coxswain—a vital role that leads the crew, steers the boat, and keeps everyone motivated on the water.
Are you beginner-friendly?
Yes! Most of our members start with no experience at all. Our coaches love welcoming newcomers and will support you from your very first session. Fun fact: many Olympic rowers only take up the sport at university—so it’s the perfect time to start!
Esport Society FAQs
Can players of any rank join?
Yes, of course any player of any rank is welcome to join Esports Society! We are open to everyone, from beginners to pros! Many of our members do not even play competitive games.
What games are played within Esports Society?
In DCU Esports, you can find Valorant, League of Legends, CS2, DOTA, Overwatch, Minecraft, Rocket League, FGC and more!
