Movement Art FAQs
If I know in my heart that I’m not a “movement person,” should I still join?
Yes. Especially you. Many of us grew up believing that movement had to look a certain way—graceful, athletic, impressive—or that if we weren’t flexible, strong, or coordinated, it wasn’t for us. This society exists exactly to challenge that idea. Movement is something we all do—when we breathe, shift in our seat, dance in our kitchen, or express ourselves with a gesture. You don’t need to be “good” at movement. You just need to be open to noticing what it feels like to move, in your own way, in your own time.
What makes this society different from dance-oriented societies?
We centre process over perfection, expression over aesthetics, and presence over performance. Movement for us is a way to explore identity, emotion, creativity, and connection. We move for joy, healing, curiosity, and community.
Is this a dance society? Or a fitness group?
Not exactly. While we draw from many movement disciplines (including dance and fitness), we’re not performance- or competition-oriented. We’re more focused on what movement feels like than how it looks.
Can I suggest or run a session?
Yes! We’re always open to ideas and love when members get involved. Whether you want to lead a warm-up, share a practice, or suggest a theme—we’d love to hear from you. This is a collective space.
When and where do you meet?
We usually hold our main session, Friday Movement Meet, once a week on campus in a studio or multipurpose space. Times and locations will be shared on our mailing list, social media, and WhatsApp group.
Is the society accessible for people with disabilities or chronic conditions?
We are deeply committed to accessibility. Many of our practices are adaptable and we work to ensure that participants can move in a way that feels right for them. Please feel free to reach out to us confidentially if you have specific access needs—we’ll do everything we can to accommodate.
What should I bring to a session?
Comfortable clothes you can move in A water bottle A yoga mat (if you have one — we also provide some) An open mind and a willingness to explore
What kind of activities do you run?
Our weekly events include: Guided movement workshops Improvisation jams Mindfulness and body awareness sessions Creative collaborations and community sharing Guest artist or facilitator workshops Occasional social gatherings and interdisciplinary events
Do I need to have dance or movement experience to join?
Absolutely not. Our sessions are designed for all. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced mover, you’re welcome. We focus on awareness, creativity, and expression—not technical skill or perfection.
What is the Movement Arts Society about?
The Movement Arts Society is a space to explore how we move, express, and connect through our bodies. We focus on somatic practices, creative movement, and embodied exploration—drawing from dance, martial arts, yoga, physical theatre, and more. Our goal is to create an inclusive, non-judgmental space where movement is for everyone—not just performers or athletes.
About Movement Art Society

The Movement Arts Society is a space for anyone curious about how we move, why we move, and what movement can teach us about ourselves and each other. We explore somatic practices and embodied movement—not as performance or competition, but as a way of connecting more deeply with our bodies, our communities, and the world around us.

Whether you’re into dance, martial arts, yoga, physical theatre, or simply curious about how to express yourself through movement, you’re welcome here. We offer a supportive, inclusive environment for beginners and experienced movers alike. Our sessions are rooted in care, creativity, and collaboration—no pressure, no right or wrong way to move.

Each week, we host movement workshops, improvisation jams, wellness sessions, guest talks, and open-floor gatherings. These are spaces to play, experiment, rest, share, and discover new ways of being in your body. We believe that movement is more than technique—it’s a form of language, a tool for resilience, and a source of joy.

Join us if you’re looking for:

  • A creative outlet beyond the pressures of performance.

  • A safe, non-judgmental space to explore how you feel through your body.

  • A community that values listening, expression, and presence.

You don’t need to be flexible, fit, or trained—just willing to show up, move, and be moved.
