Join a Trade Union Week

Posted 4th Oct 2020
Author Darragh Adelaide (Chairperson)

Trade Unions are organisations that support workers in a particular industry, and fight for better pay and working conditions. But only a quarter of Irish Workers are in trade unions. This leaves all of us open to exploitation:

  • Ireland has the 3rd highest level of low pay in the OECD
  • Irish workers have no legal right to sick pay
  • Students are at risk of exploitation through 0-hour contracts, unpaid internships and sub-contracting

This week, DCU People Before profit are encouraging all students to join a trade union to ensure that your rights at work are protected. For more information about trade unions or how to join, check out our events for the week and contact us at dcupbp@gmail.com

Cut College Fees! - Petition

Posted 23rd Sep 2020
Author Darragh Adelaide (Chairperson)

During the Labour-Fine Gael government from 2011, funding for universities was decimated. This led to our universities looking to students to fill the gap. The contribution fee was €800 in 2008 but has now risen to €3000; the government’s refusal to fund universities has hurt students and locked many out of education. We need a well-funded education system that is accessible to all students. Sign the petition to demand action here.

To whom it may concern,

I was disappointed to learn that my University will be maintaining contribution fees at €3000. This decision will have a detrimental effect on the ability of students to access and succeed at higher level education. Many students and their families have lost jobs and sources of income, and despite the limited access to university facilities and services, there has not been an equivalent reduction in the contribution fee. This decision will lock students, particularly working-class students, out of education and shows little consideration to those who do not have an appropriate learning environment at home, those who may not have good internet connections and those at risk of isolation. Education should be free and available to those who need it. I’m calling on you to work in the best interests of all students and to help us bring down the barriers to 3rd level education.

Yours sincerely,

xxx

Debenhams Workers: 150+ Days Protesting

Posted 10th Sep 2020
Author Darragh Adelaide (Chairperson)

The Debenhams workers have now been on strike for 154 days following the company going into liquidation. The workers were not paid redundancy, holiday pay and have not received their last weeks wages.

In total, Debenhams has stolen approx. €13million from workers. They have refused to pay out despite having €95 million in cash, and a further €20 million in stock in their Irish stores.

The Debenhams workers are appealing for help manning the picket line to prevent stock from being moved from stores as part of their peaceful protest. If you can lend a hand, sign up  here
