DCU Neurosoc Meet&greet + Q&A

Starts Thu 7th Oct 2021 at 17:00
Ends at 18:00
Cost FREE
Type VIRTUAL Event

Hi everyone,

Welcome to DCU Neurosoc! As you probably already know, we have our AGM next week on Thursday, when you can run for a role on the committee. However, before that, we decided to organise a friendly Meet and greet this Thursday, the 7th of October @ 5 pm, via Zoom so you can join us from anywhere, as long as you have Zoom on your laptop, mobile etc. (if you need help with installing, give us a shout). Link below

https://dcu-ie.zoom.us/j/99374512779

The purpose of this meeting is, of course, to have a chat for the first time, for all of us to get to know each other and have fun. But we also wanted to give you guys a chance to ask us anything about the roles and running for the role on the committee.

We know running for the role can be intimidating for the first time, and we want to assure you to take the plunge! ? We have your back, we were in these roles in the past years, and we will help you with the role throughout this academic year. We know all the ins and outs, and we are always only a msg away. It is nothing complicated, nothing you couldn’t handle, it won’t take too much of your time, and it’s good fun. Running for the role on the committee is a great opportunity to get to know your colleagues and the wider student community. It gives you the opportunity to try yourself in a role you like (or think you might like), do something without the fear of making a mistake, it’s an opportunity to experiment, and try things out.

You are invited to run for any of the roles, including Chairperson, Vice-chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, PRO (Public Relations Officer), BDO (Brand Design Officer), Events officer, Ordinary member, First-year rep.

You will have a chance to cooperate with our professors. But not only our School (Psychology), or faculty/campus. We are open to the public, so you can put your foot in the door, in terms of any organisation, you might be interested in (e.g., interview someone from the organisation, or invite for an event/organise and event together). Join us and make connections, get an excellent reference, and who knows, maybe put yourself forward for a future job. There is plenty of space to be creative, cooperative, or take on a leadership role. We are here to support you and answer any of your questions.

We are looking forward to seeing you on Thursday!

Neuroscience and sexuality

Starts Mon 8th Feb 2021 at 18:00
Ends at 19:00
Cost FREE
Type VIRTUAL Event

This week is the Sexual health and guidance aka SHAG week campaign and we at DCU Neuroscience Society are delighted to invite you to our live conversation "Neuroscience and sexuality - What happens in your brain when you have sex?" with special guest Dr. Nan Wise PhD neuroscientist, certified sex therapist, Associate Research Professor at Rutgers University and bestselling author, today Monday the 8th of February, @ 6 pm (UTC/GMT +0) on Zoom (link below)

https://dcu-ie.zoom.us/j/98149237659

What happens in your brain when you orgasm? Why is pleasure important for our health? How to have better sex?

These are just some of the interesting topics we will be discussing with Dr. Nan Wise.

After three decades of experience as a psychotherapist, driven by an intense desire to understand how the brain operates to create moods and behaviors, Dr. Nan Wise returned to academia in 2009 to pursue a Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience at Rutgers-Newark where she completed her dissertation project, “Genital stimulation, imagery, and orgasm in women: an fMRI analysis” in August of 2014. Her research has attempted to address gaps in the scientific literature regarding the neural basis of human sexuality, and as a result, has garnered international attention.

In her new book titled "Why Good Sex Matters: Understanding the Neuroscience of Pleasure for a Smarter, Happier, and More Purpose-Filled Life." she explores how imbalances in the wiring of the core emotional systems can disrupt our capacity for pleasure and joy, contributing to anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and general stress. In response, Dr. Nan Wise outlines tools to rebalance the body and mind.

Your brain under stress

Starts Mon 1st Feb 2021 at 18:00
Ends at 19:00
Cost FREE
Type VIRTUAL Event

Do you want to learn more about what happens to your brain when you are stressed?

With the current pandemic and lockdown, now, more than ever, we are subjected to stress. What is stress and what happens to our brains when we are stressed?

During this event, we are going to watch a couple of short Ted talks which explain some of the biological processes behind stress, how that affects the brain and more importantly what we can do to keep ourselves healthy!

This event offers a nice occasion to meet people, share some of our stressors and remind ourselves of where we are and what we can do to retain a healthy lifestyle.

At the end of the event, we'll have a small activity session together and propose a list of healthy tips to reduce stress!

Members and non-members are welcome to join!
