To be neurodivergent is to think differently. “Neurodivergent” encompasses all people who have experienced mental illnesses, learning disabilities, sensory processing disorders and more. Everyone is welcome to attend our free series of events, designed to engage people of all levels of familiarity with neurodivergence.

On Monday at 6 pm, the Introduction will address common questions about what constitutes neurodivergence, followed by a live Q&A. Tuesday will see Enda Murphy providing expert insight into how to navigate mental health challenges as a neurodivergent person. Joan McDonald will also be sharing her perspective of being diagnosed later in life and creating a group, 500 strong, of Irish autistic adults. Facilitating these crucial conversations around disclosure, diagnosis, and mental health fosters greater empathy for those of us who can feel isolated from society. Having a place where you can be authentic with peers is critical to all people; this is especially true for neurodivergent people who may struggle with feeling like an “other”.

Wednesday aims to show there is no one face of neurodivergence; anyone can be neurodivergent.

Neurodivergent is a brilliantly broad, inclusive word; in keeping with this, we will challenge common misconceptions that neurodivergence (especially autism) is a boy’s club. Brains work independently from skin colour, gender, sexuality and age.  We will be holding panel discussions on keeping the movement intersectional; we leave no one behind. Christa Holmans (Neurodivergent Rebel,) Lydia X. Z. Brown, Morénike Giwa Onaiwu and Sharon daVanport will discuss race, gender and sexuality and their implications for neurodivergent people.

On Thursday, Steve Silberman will be discussing neurodivergent creativity with our founder, Lao?ín Brennan. For the past year and a half, DCU's Neurodivergent Society has hosted creative expression workshops facilitated by Fighting Words. At 7, we will launch our creative collection online.

Our Annual General Meeting, where we elect our committee for 2021/22, will be on Friday. Our final event is a movie screening of Soul (2020).
