Being LGBT+ in Politics

Starts Mon 1st Mar 2021 at 18:00
Ends at 19:30
Cost FREE
Type VIRTUAL Event

In 2015, the people of Ireland voted to legalise same-sex marriage, in what was a resounding victory for LGBT+ people in Ireland. However, the battle for full equality is not won yet. In the most recent election, only 3 out of the 160 TDs returned were LGBT+. This Monday, March 1st, we are delighted to welcome TD for Dublin Bay-North Cian O'Callaghan, Kildare County councillor Chris Pender, and outgoing party officers Susan McGrady and Saoirse Mackin for a panel discussion on what it's like to be LGBT+ in Irish politics today. Topics covered will include homophobia in the political sphere, online abuse, and how Irish politics can be more inclusive for LGBT+ people. This event requires pre-registration at the link above, and promises to be a fascinating, insightful discussion. Can't wait to see you all there!!!

We're also delighted to be welcoming our very special guests Cllr. Mary Callaghan (Councillor for Ballymun-Finglas and Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin) and Gary Gannon (TD for Dublin-Central and SocDems spokesperson on Education, Arts and Social Protection). Our guests will speak about why they decided to enter electoral politics, why they chose the Social Democrats and what social democracy means to them.

We will also have two committee positions up for grabs on the night, first our First Year Rep and then we will elect a second Ordinary Committee Member (this position is open to everyone including first years).
