Sober 2020/2021 WE BACK BABY

Posted 3rd Oct 2020
Author Andrew Gibbons (Liaison Officer)

Hello, Hello beautiful people, I’m Andrew Gibbons (Gibby). I am the Liaison Officer for Sober this year but myself and our wonderful Secretary Josh Moffatt will be attempting to be Webmasters this year. Please note that I am very technologically inept so please bare with me for the time being. ALRIGHT!!!!! Sober is back baby, what a year it’s been huh? But the pink revolution never stops that grind, so no matter what 2020 throws at us, Sober will rise to the occasion and we are going to make this year the best it can be. I’m hoping this will be a nice weekly blog. The phase of having a blog or tumblr page at 14 never really hit me so now here’s my time to shine. This isn’t going to be one of your fancy blogs so you can take off your fancy dresswear instead cuddle up to the fire, get a cup of tea and chill with me as I give you a little bit of an insight to what Sober is. I’m going to be honest with you, I have dabbled in many events and societies throughout my time in DCU but Sober has got to be my favourite. It’s such a chill society, none of us are exactly pioneers of Sobriety but our goal is to create fun events and a safe space that doesn’t require alcohol. Some societies can be a little intimidating to join when you begin. I know I was scared to join some because I thought you had to have some huge talent to be apart of certain clubs or societies, but with Sober doesn’t have a requirement, it’s a society that has events like Hangover Hub (every Wednesday 11am) that just allows you to chill out, have a break from a stressful day, have fun with your friends, make new friends and be apart of the most wholesome society in DCU. I was the only person from my school who went to DCU, and I felt I was entering a whole new world. In order to make new friends I felt that going out and being sociable would be the best way to find my footing wit meeting new people. The thing is I don’t drink. I’m perfectly happy just vibin with a can of coke while absolutely setting fire to the dance floor. I’ve never had an issue with going out and being the only Sober one there, but sometimes I just want to go bowling, I want to do something else besides going out. Sober was a huge help in that way. I adored going bowling or going to jumpzone with my friends. How open and nice everyone was. It also was a nice opportunity to make friends with people outside of a nightclub or bar. There wasn’t a single moment I ever felt intimidated by Sober. I used to hear all the time that Sober “was like a family”, which I never really believed, I just thought that was some happy go lucky phrase that all the societies used to get you to become a member. But that completely changed when I noticed just how supportive and welcoming everyone was. I had a very difficult last year like many of us, but the Sober committee and members had my back at every turn. I had never experienced such kindness from people I didn’t know that well. Sober is a special society. I’m so proud to call each and every person I’ve bonded with at a sober event my friend. My college experience has completely changed because of this society. I’ve had my own talk show, I’ve stripped down to my jocks in front of hundreds beside some the sexiest men I’ve ever seen (you know who you are) and met some of the most amazing, talented, lovely people you could ever imagine. I’m so excited for what we get up to this year, and if I can give even one person a similar experience to the one I’ve had with Sober, I think I’ll have done a good job. So come on down to our events, send us a message, I promise you won’t regret it. Sober is so much more than a society that creates events without alcohol. Its a special place full of the most wonderful people you will ever meet. We also have the best merch on campus hehe. See you all next week, I bid you all adieu. (I’m not sure if I said that right.)
