She previously worked on the ROSIE Study a research outcome study in Ireland evaluating drug treatment effectiveness. More recently she was part of an advisory group to the Pompidou Group in the Council of Europe supporting the creation of guidelines for a rights based approach where children are living with parental substance use (considering the rights of the child, mother, father, family). A long table talk is modelled after a dinner party conversation where everyone’s voices are of equal importance. No hierarchy, no domination of the conversation, everyone’s input is invaluable. It’s participatory in nature but without the pressure of something like a presentation - you can have your say or step back and listen to others, and always rejoin the discussion if something comes to mind. It has a facilitator to kind of make sure the conversation stays on topic and stays within the time frame. But ultimately we all come to a virtual ‘table’ with a topic in mind to learn from the diverse perspectives of our peers. It’s just a fluid and dynamic way of having meaningful conversations and uplifting our own knowledge and experiences as a group.

Welcome to Connected DCU Society, a thriving community established in 2021 by DCU alum Sinead Lynch.
Our primary mission is to bridge the gap between online students at DCU, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment that fosters connections and combats the isolation often experienced by remote learners. Initially designed to offer a safe space for DCU’s online students, our society quickly evolved to include in-person students seeking meaningful connections and peer support online. Our core goal remains steadfast: to alleviate the sense of isolation through a vibrant community.
At Connected DCU Society, we organise a variety of events catering to both online and in-person students. From our lively summer meet-ups to our regular study groups using the Pomodoro technique - where productivity meets community spirit! One of our signature events, the “Lunch and Learn” series, invites speakers from diverse occupational and life backgrounds to share their experiences. They’re like TED Talks, but more casual and interactive, aiming to elevate our collective knowledge.
We welcome all students at DCU to join our diverse and international membership base. Our community thrives on the principles of diversity and inclusion, celebrating varied backgrounds and perspectives and coming together as one big, marvellous collective. Members benefit not only from our structured study groups and enlightening “Lunch & Learn” sessions but also from the profound sense of belonging and support within our community.
In a world where online learning can often feel isolating, Connected DCU Society strives to create a space where every student feels heard, valued, and, most importantly, connected. Join us to be a part of a dynamic community where friendships flourish, because here at Connected DCU Society, we are transforming the online learning experience at DCU!
