The Griffith Avenue Mile returned on Sunday last with hundreds of athletes across all ages taking on the renowned course.

The race first took place back in 1983 and was known as the 'Dublin Straight Mile'. That year it was won by South African-born American Sydney Maree, in a blistering 3.49.30.

Leading Irish athletes such as Eamonn Coghlan were in the field that day, and Ray Flynn ran strongly to finish third.

The race was revived in 2019 but had been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic until last year. This year it made a bigger and better return than before.

DCU are one of the proud sponsors of the race and being so close to all of our campuses, a number of our athletes who are more used to running the metric mile or longer donned the blue and yellow singlets for the first time this season.

Track athlete Benjamin Caullier took charge at the front of the race, with the DCU crest proudly on display. Juan Ignacio Pena, the Chilean record holder in the mile, along with Kevin McGrath, a 3:46 1500m man, were right there with him in a leading pack. Late on in the race, Juan and Kevin made a break, with Ben hot on their heels, taking a proud bronze position over the line in a personal best time of 4:10.

Some strong performances from Paul Morgan (17th, 4:37) and Cian Murray (22nd, 4:48) rounded out the top 25 for the DCU men.

This year also had the introduction of the 400m relay showcase event, off the back of the recent sucsesses of Irish teams in the event. DCU had a strong team put forward, with Callum Hurley, Moya O'Connell and Oisin Kelly, taking the win in the event, which was started by our own Olympian Jack Raftery!
