The Griffith Avenue Mile returned today with hundreds of athletes across all ages taking on the renowned course.

The race first took place back in 1983 and was known as the 'Dublin Straight Mile'. That year it was won by South African-born American Sydney Maree, in a blistering 3.49.30.

Leading Irish athletes such as Eamonn Coghlan were in the field that day, and Ray Flynn ran strongly to finish third.

The race was revived in 2019 but has been postponed ever since due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year it made a welcome return, bigger and better than before.

DCU are one of the proud sponsors of the race and being so close to all of our campuses, a number of our athletes who are more used to running the metric mile or longer donned the blue and yellow singlets for the first time this season.

Men's captain Michael Murphy who is better known as a 5000m runner stepped down in distance to see what he could do.

The result? An impressive time of 4:18, good enough for second place in the race for the Tullamore AC and Joe Ryan coached athlete. Michael finished behind Hiko Tonosa of Dundrum South Dublin who recently competed at the European Championships over 10,000m.

Paul Morgan ran well to finish in 12th in 4:46, while Barry Clavin was 21st in 5:04.

Training is back in full this week ahead of a busy year ahead. All training in DCU Sports Grounds unless otherwise stated. Full schedule below:
