Rowing FAQs
Where is training?
Neptune Rowing Club in Islandbridge, for water sessions, weights, and ergos in the evenings. We also have designated rowing access times at the DCU Glasnevin campus gym.
How often is training?
Novices: 4 times a week Experienced rowers: 7/8 times a week
Do you compete in competitions?
We regularly host friendly races with other unis for novices throughout the year, allowing them to build confidence and gain experience. Our main DCU competition is the annual University Championships where colleges from all over Ireland come to compete for a weekend in April. Additionally, our members, through DCU's membership with Neptune Rowing Club can represent the club at regattas.
Do I have to row to join?
Absolutely not! You can also get involved as a coxswain—a vital role that leads the crew, steers the boat, and keeps everyone motivated on the water.
Are you beginner-friendly?
Yes! Most of our members start with no experience at all. Our coaches love welcoming newcomers and will support you from your very first session. Fun fact: many Olympic rowers only take up the sport at university—so it’s the perfect time to start!
About Rowing

Head over to our Instagram (@dcurowing) for the latest news and updates from the team

DCU Rowing is one of the university’s newest sports clubs, but it is already making strong strokes (no pun intended) in the Irish rowing scene. With a fresh spirit and a strong sense of drive, the club continues to grow, welcoming both novice rowers and experienced athletes.

In the past season, the club secured second place in the Club Women’s Single Sculls, and our new novice women’s squad achieved 4th at the University Championship in Cork.

Beyond DCU Rowing Club, members are warmly welcomed at Neptune Rowing Club, our home base, where we hold both water and ergo sessions. This past season, our DCU athletes have secured wins across multiple regattas, including Skibbereen Regatta, Commercial Regatta, and Neptune Regatta.

From quiet evening training sessions in Islandbridge (bar a small army of swans) to novices launching their first boat. And the day you finally make it into a double but spend more time in the reeds than the water (it happens to the best of us), rowing offers something for everyone. It is a sport that welcomes all ages and skill levels, regardless of background. Did you know that many Olympic rowers first took up the sport at university?

Whether you are joining Dublin City University in September 2026 or are a current student looking for a new challenge, rowing provides the unique opportunity to watch the sunrise over the river at Islandbridge, just you and the water.

Training sessions are 4 times a week with a mixture of on-the-water, ergos and weights sessions.

Follow us on social media (@dcurowing) or contact us via email (dcu.rowing@gmail.com) for any other questions you have. We look forward to welcoming you to the DCU Rowing family!
